Nudibranch is pronounced “noody-brank.” Nudibranchs belong to the order Nudibranchia, a group of soft-bodied marine gastropod molluscs that shed their shells after their larval stage. Nudibranchs are a family of opistobranchs (sea slugs) within the phylum Mollusca (molluscs). They are found throughout the world’s oceans, but are most abundant in shallow, tropical waters. Their scientific name, Nudibranchia, means naked gills.
Their names may be complicated, but they are incredibly diverse and beautiful!
